Vintage (50)

*
How many of you learned to read with Sally, Dick and Jane? When I was teaching school, in 1971, the school district was giving away their old, no-longer-used, textbooks. I picked up several, including this one, The New Guess Who. To me it's a treasure, because I have such fond memories of learning to read with this classic series.

The first edition of Guess Who was published in 1951. That would have been the edition I learned from. This, The New Guess Who, was published in 1962.

Don't these old books have beautiful illustrations. These look similar to the 'Ladybird' series in the UK. The images in this kind of books capture the essence of the times, don't they.

I learned to read with those.

What you have there IS a real treasure!! I bought a reproduction one a couple of years ago...just for the good memories.

GR, this one is original, and not in the best of shape. It appears to have gotten very wet at some time -- probably some child dropped it in a Juneau slush-puddle. It also has dirty little fingerprint smudges here and there - but to me that just makes it more special.

I have a Dick and Jane book too. I so enjoyed it when my grandson practiced his reading with it. You can't help but love Dick and Jane, Grammom

AGREED....it IS all the more special...it is original and some children like us actually learned to read with it.

More soon.

We had similar books in the UK, I remember the levels (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d then move onto 2a, etc.). I also remember some books with a caveboy called Trog, and years later, when I was helping Mum one night (looking after the young kids whose parents were watching their older siblings in the school play), I pulled a book out to read to one boy, and lo and behold, it was Trog!

So treasure your book, as I'm sure you will!
