History (127)

*

Here is the Owl Bar and Cafe, in San Antonio, New Mexico, a sparsely populated agricultural community near Socorro, New Mexico.

San Antonio was the gateway to the Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was detonated in 1945. A number of the scientists working at the Trinity Site lodged here, at the "Owl." One story says that the closest telephone to the Trinity Site was located in the Owl, and that one of the scientists went there to make the historic phone call, reporting that the bomb had been successfully detonated.

San Antonio is also famous as the birth place of Conrad Hilton, and, in fact, his father used this same building (The Owl) as part of his family store.

Today, The Owl is known for it's AMAZING green chile cheese burgers. Locals come from miles around for them.

What history the place has - and I bet the burgers must really be something, to attract the locals so much!
